I am renting a car for 5 days. I’m not sure if my own personal car insurance covers for a rental, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t. Its almost 0 for the insurance that they offer! Seems like a trap. Is it absolutely necessary to purchase it? Thanks

I will be renting a car in L.A. next month. I have minimal car insurance on my car, and my agent told me I do not have any coverage on a rental car. What is the minimum mandated by law that I must purchase from the rental car company? I know that there are 2 or 3 different types – I want to make sure I am buying only what is mandated by law.
