Do I have to wait for my current car insurance to expire before switching to another?

(California) I’m currently with Progressive and would like to switch to Wawanesa car insurance. However I have Progressive until July 08 and I have already paid my premium for this period. If I wanted to switch to Wawanesa immediately, would I forfeit my Progressive coverage or would the two companies negotiate the remainder of my term with Progressive. Any chance Progressive could refund the remainder of my term with them?
