I’ve just bought a new car and the rego is in my name, can I buy the insurance under my partners name, or does the insurance have to be in the same name??? I live in NSW in Australia.

Generally insurance companies that are insuring you want you to have "insurable interest" meaning ownership of the vehicle. They would usually want the 1st named insured to be a registered owner but after that they do not care how many operators you add to your policy that have your permission to operate your vehicle. That at least for California in the USA. But there are "broker companies" out there that wouldn’t require this but its just not as common.
