How important is it to have Medical Expenses added to your car insurance policy?

I was told to reduce my monthly car insurance payments a little I could remove that. I was told that your medical insurance would kick in to pay for any injuries, or if someone was with you theirs would kick in. They said that car insurance would be a secondary to your medical insurance. Has anyone ever got good use out of having this on their insurance policy??

TEXAS: There are two types of medical insurance that you can purchase with auto insurance. The first is straight medical cost coverage. This is coverage for you and anyone in your vehicle should you have an accident and you are at fault. Say you carry $2500 (various amounts can be purchased) on your auto, and you have regular major medical insurance as well. Your major medical policy will have deductibles and copays, right. Well, the medical coverage on your auto policy will kick in to help pay those deductible and copays up to the policy limit of $2500 on you and others in your car. If you didn’t have major medical insurance then the whole $2500 would go toward your medical cost. You could just opt to pay those deductibles and copays out of pocket, but usually this coverage isn’t very expensive, so the savings may or may not be worth dropping the coverage.
Second type of insurance is PIP (personal injury protection) this can be purchased in various amounts (usually $2500-10,000), but this can cover other things in addition to medical coverage, like lost wages or pay you an amount per day while in court should you be sued…that sort of thing. It usually cost more than the first type I explained above.
If someone is riding with you in your car, their insurance will not cover you, period. If someone hits you, then their insurance should cover you. If they are uninsured, then your uninsured motorist coverage will kick in. (Some people try to save money by dropping uninsured/underinsured motorist, I would thoroughly discuss this with your agent before doing so.)
