When I was in the Navy and deployed I would get storage rate (covered damage, theft, fire) while I stored the car in long term parking on the base.

I also do this now with a jeep that I keep at my summer home.

Not all companies offer this coverage and the state may require that you suspend your registration in some way during the inactive periods. 
Be aware that you have to re-activate your coverage before you drive!</description>
